BWR vs BWP vs Marine — Understanding the Grades

Contractors frequently confuse BWR and BWP — and the difference is significant for kitchen and wet-area specifications.

BWR
Boiling Water Resistant
  • Moderate moisture resistance
  • Interior use only
  • IS:303 standard
  • Suitable: dry interior furniture
  • Not for direct water exposure
BWP
Boiling Water Proof
  • Full boiling water proof
  • IS:710 certified
  • Interior & semi-exterior
  • Standard for kitchen carcasses
  • Commercial & residential
Marine
Marine Grade
  • Highest moisture resistance
  • Void-free core veneer
  • Boat-building specification
  • Extreme wet environments
  • Highest cost per sheet

Kitchen carcass specification: BWP (IS:710) is the professional standard for modular kitchen base and wall cabinet carcasses in Nagpur. Marine grade is overkill for most residential kitchens and commands a significant premium — specify it for heavy commercial or near-water applications.

FAQ

BWP / Marine — Common Questions

BWR (Boiling Water Resistant — IS:303) can withstand moderate moisture but is not fully waterproof. BWP (Boiling Water Proof — IS:710) is tested by boiling sheets in water for 72+ hours — the veneer layers must not delaminate. BWP is the correct specification for kitchen carcasses, bathroom furniture and wet area applications.

For residential modular kitchens: Greenply BWP (Ecotec) and Century BWP Gold are both reliable IS:710-certified choices. For premium commercial projects: Century Club Prime or Kitply Marine. All brands we stock are ISI-marked — we can verify the batch certification. Contact us to discuss the right specification for your project budget.

BWP plywood is suitable for exterior applications that are sheltered from direct rain — carports, covered balcony storage, exterior door frames. For truly outdoor exposure, marine grade (void-free core) is more appropriate. Neither should be left fully exposed to rain without a protective surface finish.
