Particle board (chipboard) is the economy panel substrate — flat, consistent, and the lowest cost option for laminated furniture where structural loading is limited. Used extensively in ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture and office workstations.
| Factor | Particle Board | MDF | Plywood |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest | Medium | Higher |
| Surface Smoothness | Good (rough core) | Excellent | Good |
| Screw-Holding | Poor at edges | Poor at edges | Good |
| Moisture Resistance | Low | Low–Medium (grade) | High (BWP) |
| Weight | Lightest | Medium | Heaviest |
| Structural Strength | Low | Medium | High |
| Best Use | Economy laminate furniture | Premium furniture | Structural, wet areas |
When to specify particle board: Office workstations, RTA furniture, budget-grade wardrobe carcasses, and exhibition display units that will be laminated and are not load-bearing. Do NOT specify for kitchen carcasses, wet areas or structural shelving with heavy loads.
